Clamshell mode means using your laptop with the lid closed, connected to an external monitor, keyboard and mouse, like a desktop. It frees up desk space and puts your screen at a comfortable height.

What you need
- An external monitor connected by HDMI, USB-C or a dock. See how to connect one.
- An external keyboard and mouse (wireless or USB).
- The laptop plugged into power (required on Macs; strongly recommended on Windows).
- Optional: a vertical stand or a dock for one-cable setups.
Windows 11: stop the laptop sleeping when you close the lid
- Search Start for Control Panel and open Hardware and Sound → Power Options.
- Click Choose what closing the lid does on the left.
- Under Plugged in, set “When I close the lid” to Do nothing.
- Click Save changes.
Leave the “On battery” setting as Sleep, so the laptop still sleeps when you close it and put it in your bag.
Mac
MacBooks support clamshell mode automatically. Connect the charger, an external display, and a keyboard and mouse (or trackpad), then close the lid. The external display becomes the main screen. If it goes to sleep, check the charger is connected, and press a key or click the mouse to wake it.
Is clamshell mode bad for the laptop?
Not if you manage heat. Most laptops vent through the bottom, sides or rear hinge, not the keyboard. But closing the lid does remove a little airflow on some models, and a laptop flat on a desk can’t breathe well underneath.
- Use a vertical laptop stand or raise the laptop so air flows freely underneath.
- Keep vents clear and clean. See how to clean a laptop fan.
- If the laptop is plugged in all day, turn on a battery charge limit to reduce battery wear from heat and high charge.
- Gaming laptops run much hotter with the lid closed. Keep them open, or monitor temperatures.
Troubleshooting
- External monitor goes black when the lid closes: double-check the lid setting above for “Plugged in”, and that the external monitor is set as the main display (Settings → System → Display).
- Can’t wake the laptop with the lid closed: Device Manager → Keyboards / Mice → Properties → Power Management → tick Allow this device to wake the computer. Or open the lid and press the power button.
- Windows moves your windows around after reconnecting: this is common with multi-monitor setups. Windows 11 remembers window locations per monitor (Settings → System → Display → Multiple displays).
