Short answer: reliability depends far more on the product line than the brand. Business laptops (Lenovo ThinkPad, Dell Pro/Latitude, HP EliteBook) and Apple MacBooks have the best track records for durability and long-term support. Budget consumer lines from every brand cut corners. Here’s how the major brands compare and which of their lines to look for.
How to judge reliability yourself
- Business vs. consumer line. Business laptops are built to survive years of daily commuting, are tested against drops, spills and temperature extremes (often to MIL-STD-810H), have keyboards rated for heavy use, and get BIOS and driver updates for longer.
- Parts availability and repairability. Can you buy a replacement battery, keyboard or charger in three years? Lenovo, Dell, HP and Framework publish service manuals.
- Warranty and support. Look for on-site or depot service options and how easy the claims process is, not just the warranty length.
- Owner reviews after 6+ months. Sort reviews by “most recent” and look for repeated hinge, screen or battery complaints.
Brand-by-brand
Apple
MacBooks consistently top owner-satisfaction surveys, get macOS updates for 6–8 years, and hold their value. The downsides are that nothing is upgradeable and out-of-warranty repairs are expensive, so consider AppleCare+. Which MacBook to buy.
Lenovo
ThinkPad is the benchmark for durable laptops: excellent keyboards, robust builds, easy repairs and long support. Yoga and Legion (gaming) are well-built consumer lines. IdeaPad ranges from good (Slim 5) to basic (IdeaPad 1). IdeaPad vs ThinkPad.
Dell
Dell’s business line (Dell Pro, formerly Latitude) is very durable and easy to service. The XPS name returned in 2026 for Dell’s premium consumer laptops. Entry-level “Dell” laptops (formerly Inspiron) are fine, but feel budget. Dell and HP’s new names explained.
HP
EliteBook and ProBook business laptops are solid. HP’s consumer laptops are now all called OmniBook (replacing Pavilion, Envy and Spectre). The higher tiers (OmniBook X, Ultra) are well-built; the cheapest tiers are mixed. Gaming laptops are sold as Omen and Victus.
ASUS
ASUS makes some of the most innovative hardware around (Zenbook, ROG Zephyrus, ProArt) at competitive prices, and the hardware is generally reliable. Its customer support and warranty handling have drawn criticism in the past, so register your laptop and keep your receipt.
Acer
Acer is the value leader. The Aspire, Swift and Nitro lines offer a lot for the money, and the Swift Go/Swift 14 AI and Predator Helios lines are well reviewed. Budget models are plasticky but generally dependable for the price.
Acer vs ASUS?
For budget laptops and budget gaming, they trade blows. Acer usually wins on price (Aspire, Nitro V), and ASUS often wins on screens, design and features (Vivobook, TUF, Zenbook). Compare the specific models, especially GPU power (TGP) in gaming laptops. See our gaming laptop picks.
MSI
MSI is a gaming specialist with strong cooling and performance, especially in its mid- and high-end models (Stealth, Raider, Vector). Its budget gaming lines (Thin, Cyborg, Katana) are good value but more plasticky, and fit and finish varies. Read reviews of the exact model.
Microsoft Surface
Premium design and great screens. Recent Surface Laptops are much more repairable than early models, but they’re expensive and offer fewer ports.
Framework
The most repairable and upgradeable laptops you can buy: every part, from ports to mainboard, can be swapped with one screwdriver. They’re slightly pricier and less polished than mainstream rivals, but ideal if you want a laptop that lasts a decade.
The most durable laptop lines, summarised
- Lenovo ThinkPad T and X1 series
- Dell Pro (Latitude) 5000/7000 series
- HP EliteBook
- Apple MacBook Air and MacBook Pro
- Framework Laptop 13/16 (for repairability)
Tip: a certified refurbished business laptop from one of these lines is often more durable than a brand-new budget laptop at the same price.
