How to tell a real laptop deal from a fake one

  1. Check price history. Use CamelCamelCamel or Keepa for Amazon. A “40% off” badge against an inflated list price is not a deal. Compare with the lowest price over the last 3–6 months.
  2. Compare the exact configuration. Retailers often sell special “Black Friday” versions with less RAM, less storage or an older chip under a familiar name. Check RAM, storage and processor model, not just the brand.
  3. Beware “doorbuster” specs. 4GB RAM, 64GB eMMC storage and old Celeron chips are bad buys at any price. See what to avoid in a cheap laptop.
  4. Price-match and price-protect. Best Buy and some manufacturers will refund the difference if the price drops within a set window. Check the policy before you buy.
  5. Know the return window. Most retailers extend holiday returns into January, so buying early is low-risk.

What counts as a good price?

  • Good: 15–20% below the typical street price of the last few months.
  • Great: the lowest price in the last 6–12 months on price-tracking tools.
  • Buy immediately: a current-generation model at a new all-time low, especially Apple laptops, which rarely drop far.

Memory and SSD shortages have pushed laptop prices up through 2026, so this year’s Black Friday may be the best chance for a while to buy below list price.

Is Black Friday or Cyber Monday better for laptops?

They overlap heavily now. Windows laptops are often cheapest on Black Friday, while Apple and accessory deals frequently peak on Cyber Monday. Track prices on both.

Should I buy now or wait?

If your laptop is working, wait for late November. If you need one now, buy a model from our guides and keep the receipt. Many retailers offer price adjustments if it drops within their policy window. See the best time to buy a laptop.
