Short answer: under $500, the best Windows laptops right now are the Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3 (Ryzen 5, 16GB) and the Acer Aspire Go 15. If you mostly live in a web browser, a Chromebook Plus gives you a better experience for the money. If you can stretch a little, the MacBook Neo is the best inexpensive laptop overall.
Budget laptops are where buyers get burned most often, so read the “avoid” section before you buy anything, even something we recommend. Prices on these models swing a lot week to week.

Best budget Windows laptop
Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3 14 (Ryzen 5 8540U)
This configuration hits the three specs that matter most at this price: a modern 6-core Ryzen 5 processor, 16GB of fast LPDDR5X memory and a 512GB SSD. The 14-inch 1920×1200 screen is taller than the usual 1080p panel, which helps with documents. Lenovo’s budget keyboards are also some of the best in this class.
Good: 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD at a budget price, fast enough for heavy multitasking, compact, good keyboard.
Not so good: Screen brightness is only average, memory is soldered, plastic build.
Cheapest laptop we’d actually buy
Acer Aspire Go 15 (Intel Core i3-N355)
The Aspire Go 15 is a no-frills 15.6-inch laptop with a 1080p IPS screen and the 8-core Intel Core i3-N355, which is a big step up from the Celeron and Pentium chips that used to fill this price bracket. It’s great for browsing, email, streaming, schoolwork and Office. Testers routinely get 10+ hours of light use from it.
Check storage when you buy: some versions ship with a small 128GB drive. Look for 256GB or more.
Good: Very low price, decent battery life, comfortable full-size keyboard with number pad, 1080p IPS screen.
Not so good: Only 8GB of RAM, mediocre webcam and speakers, not for gaming or editing.
Proven budget workhorse
Acer Aspire 3 (Ryzen 3 7320U)
With thousands of owner reviews and a solid reliability record, the Aspire 3 is a safe pick if you want something boring and dependable. The Ryzen 3 7320U and LPDDR5 memory are fine for everyday work, and it has a full-size HDMI port and USB-C charging.
Good: Long track record, light for a 15.6-inch laptop, USB-C charging, good battery life.
Not so good: 8GB of soldered RAM, base storage is small, display is dim outdoors.
Best budget Chromebook
Acer Chromebook Plus 514
If you mostly use Google Docs, Gmail, YouTube, Netflix and web apps, a Chromebook Plus is the best value in laptops. ChromeOS feels fast on modest hardware, updates itself in the background, and is extremely resistant to malware. This model has a 14-inch 1080p touchscreen, 8GB of RAM and generous storage for a Chromebook.
Good: Fast and simple, almost zero maintenance, long update support, touchscreen.
Not so good: No full Windows desktop apps (Office desktop, Adobe, most games), so make sure everything you need runs on the web or Android.
Best battery life on a budget
HP OmniBook 3 14 (Snapdragon X)
Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X chips brought ARM-style battery life to Windows, and the OmniBook 3 puts one in a budget 14-inch laptop with 16GB of RAM and a sharp 2K screen. It stays cool, silent and lasts well over a working day. HP’s OmniBook name replaced Pavilion, Envy and Spectre in 2025. Here’s what HP’s new names mean.
Good: Excellent battery life, 16GB RAM, sharp screen, cool and quiet.
Not so good: 256GB of storage, a few older apps, games and anti-cheat systems don’t run on ARM Windows, so check your must-have software first.
Worth stretching for
Apple MacBook Neo
The MacBook Neo costs more than anything else on this list, but its aluminium build, excellent trackpad, all-day battery and long software support make it the best inexpensive laptop overall. Its 8GB of memory is the main compromise. It’s fine for everyday tasks, but it isn’t a long-term pick for heavy multitasking.
Good: Premium build and screen, great battery, macOS updates for many years, high resale value.
Not so good: Over $500, 8GB RAM, limited ports.
What to avoid in a cheap laptop
Amazon is flooded with budget laptops that look like bargains on paper. These are the red flags:
- 4GB of RAM. Windows 11 is miserable with 4GB. Treat 8GB as the bare minimum and 16GB as the target.
- eMMC storage or “64GB/128GB storage”. eMMC is slow, and Windows updates alone can fill 64GB. Look for “SSD” or “NVMe” and at least 256GB.
- Old processors: Intel Celeron N4020/N4120/N4500, Pentium Silver, AMD Athlon, or anything “11th gen” or older at full price.
- Third-party “upgraded” listings. Titles like “64GB RAM, 2TB SSD, Office Lifetime, Win 11 Pro” with a strange brand prefix are usually resellers who opened the laptop and added parts. The manufacturer’s warranty may not cover those parts, and the “lifetime Office” key is often grey-market. Buy listings sold by the manufacturer or by Amazon.com.
- Combined storage claims like “384GB (128GB UFS + 256GB microSD)”. That’s a small internal drive plus a memory card.
- Unknown brands with no support website or driver downloads.
Why budget laptops cost more in 2026
Memory and SSD prices jumped sharply through 2026 because chipmakers are prioritising AI data-centre orders, and analysts don’t expect relief before 2027. As a result, laptop makers have raised prices or quietly cut RAM and storage in budget models. It’s more important than ever to check the exact spec of the listing you’re buying, not just the model name.
How much should you spend?
- Under $300: Chromebooks only. Windows laptops at this price are usually too slow to be pleasant.
- $350–$500: The sweet spot for Windows budget laptops with 8–16GB RAM and an SSD.
- $600–$800: You start getting better screens, aluminium builds and the MacBook Neo.

FAQ
Is a refurbished laptop a better deal?
Often, yes, if it’s manufacturer-refurbished (Apple Certified Refurbished, Dell Outlet, Lenovo Outlet) or Amazon Renewed Premium, which come with a warranty. A refurbished business laptop such as a ThinkPad T-series is frequently better built than a new budget laptop at the same price.
Can I game on a budget laptop?
Light games like Minecraft, Roblox, Fortnite at low settings and older titles will run on recent Ryzen or Intel Core Ultra integrated graphics. For modern AAA games you need a dedicated GPU. See our gaming laptop picks.
