Short answer: the 14-inch MacBook Pro (M5) is the best laptop for programming for most developers: fast compiles, a superb screen, all-day battery life and a Unix environment that runs the same tools as your servers. Prefer Windows or Linux? The Lenovo ThinkPad T14s has the best keyboard and Linux support. Doing machine learning with CUDA? You need an NVIDIA GPU, like the Lenovo Legion 5.

What matters for programming
- RAM first: 16GB minimum, 24–32GB recommended. IDEs, Docker, browsers, emulators and local AI coding tools are memory-hungry. On a Mac, memory can’t be upgraded later.
- A great keyboard and screen. You’ll stare at code for hours: 14–16 inches, 16:10, sharp text.
- Your target platform. iOS/macOS development requires a Mac. Windows-specific .NET or game development is easiest on Windows. CUDA/ML needs an NVIDIA GPU.
- Battery life and silence for coding away from a desk.

Best for most developers
Apple MacBook Pro 14-inch (M5)
Fast, quiet and efficient, with the same performance on battery as plugged in. The mini-LED display is excellent for long coding sessions, and macOS gives you a native Unix shell, Homebrew and first-class Docker support. It is required for iOS development. Configure it with 24GB or more of memory if you run containers or local AI models.
Good: Excellent performance per watt, superb screen, great battery, Unix environment, HDMI and SD slot.
Not so good: Memory upgrades are expensive and permanent, no CUDA.
Best budget Mac for coding
Apple MacBook Air 13-inch (M5, 24GB / 1TB)
The fanless Air handles web, mobile and backend development easily. This 24GB/1TB configuration gives you headroom for Docker and multiple projects. It will slow down during very long builds compared with the Pro.
Good: Light, silent, 24GB RAM, great value for developers.
Not so good: Throttles on sustained builds, only two ports.
Best Windows / Linux laptop for programming
Lenovo ThinkPad T14s Gen 6 (Intel)
ThinkPads have the best keyboards in the business and the most reliable Linux support. Ubuntu and Fedora run well on Intel ThinkPads, and Lenovo certifies many models. The T14s is light, durable and serviceable, and runs WSL2 on Windows well. Choose the Intel version for the easiest Linux experience.
Good: Best keyboard, excellent Linux support, durable and light, good ports.
Not so good: Expensive at full price (watch Lenovo.com sales), average speakers.
Best for machine learning (CUDA)
Lenovo Legion 5 Gen 10 (RTX 5060)
If you train models with PyTorch or TensorFlow locally, an NVIDIA GPU with CUDA is still the standard. The Legion 5 pairs an RTX 5060 with a fast Ryzen 7, upgradeable RAM and good cooling. Note the RTX 5060’s 8GB of VRAM limits model size, so for bigger models consider cloud GPUs.
Good: CUDA GPU, upgradeable RAM and SSD, strong cooling, good keyboard.
Not so good: Heavy, short battery life, 8GB VRAM.
For heavy workloads
Apple MacBook Pro 14-inch (M5 Pro)
Many more CPU and GPU cores and much larger memory options. It suits large codebases, mobile apps with heavy simulators, or running local LLMs with 32GB+ of unified memory.
Good: Desktop-class performance, huge memory options.
Not so good: Expensive.
Also consider: Framework Laptop 13
If you value repairability and Linux, the Framework Laptop 13 lets you replace or upgrade every part, including RAM, storage, ports, even the mainboard, and is popular with Linux developers. It is sold directly from Framework’s website rather than Amazon.
Setup tips for a new dev laptop
- Windows: install WSL2 with Ubuntu, Windows Terminal and Dev Drive for faster builds.
- Mac: install Homebrew, then use a Docker runtime like Docker Desktop or OrbStack.
- All: add an external monitor and a dock. More screen space is the biggest productivity win.
FAQ
Is 16GB of RAM enough for programming?
For web development and learning to code, yes. For Docker-heavy, Android Studio or local AI work, choose 24–32GB. See how much RAM you need.
Mac or Windows for computer science students?
Both work for most courses. A Mac is required for iOS development, Windows for some game and .NET courses, and Linux is easy to run on either via virtual machines, WSL or dual-booting.
